Overview

Monaco does not run a fixed price investment programme. Instead it grants a residence card, the carte de sejour, to applicants who demonstrate sufficient financial means, secure accommodation in the Principality and a clean criminal record.

Applicants from outside the European Economic Area normally need to obtain a French long stay visa before they can lodge the Monaco application, because Monaco sits within the French visa framework.

Qualifying routes

Financial standing is most often shown through a reference letter from a Monaco bank confirming a deposit held with that bank. The bank sets the level it requires based on the applicant profile, so there is no single official figure.

Applicants also provide proof of accommodation, whether owned or rented, valid health cover and supporting personal documents. The exact file depends on nationality and circumstances.

Timeline

Reported processing times commonly run from about two to five months once a complete file is submitted, subject to background checks. Confirm the current expected timeline with the official authority.

Indicative costs

Costs depend on the bank deposit chosen, housing, professional support and official fees. Because the bank sets the deposit level, treat any quoted figure as indicative only and confirm with the bank and the official authority.

What it unlocks

The carte de sejour grants the right to reside in Monaco. Cards are issued for set periods and renewed on continued eligibility, with longer validity available to established residents over time. Monaco residence does not by itself grant Monegasque nationality, which has its own separate and lengthy requirements.

Common questions

Is there a fixed investment amount for Monaco residence?

No. Monaco does not publish a single fixed figure. A Monaco bank sets the deposit it requires for its reference letter based on the applicant profile. Confirm the position with the bank and the official authority.

Do I need a French visa first?

Applicants from outside the European Economic Area normally obtain a French long stay visa before lodging the Monaco application, because Monaco sits within the French visa framework.

Does residence lead to a Monaco passport?

Not directly. Monegasque nationality has separate and demanding requirements. Residence alone does not grant it.
