What documents prove your source of funds?

Investment migration programmes run due diligence to confirm your money is clean and clearly traceable. Knowing what proves source of funds, and source of wealth, helps you prepare a clean file.

Source of funds and source of wealth

Source of funds means where the specific money for this investment came from. Source of wealth means how you built your overall assets over time. Programmes often ask for both, and want a clear paper trail linking the two.

The aim is a story that documents can back at every step, from how the wealth was generated to how the exact funds reached the account paying for the investment.

Documents by type of income

Employment income is usually shown with an employment contract, recent payslips and personal tax returns. Business ownership is shown with company registration, audited or reviewed accounts, and dividend records.

Sale of property is shown with the sale deed and completion statement. Sale of shares or other investments is shown with broker or custodian statements. Each type of income has its own natural set of supporting papers.

Inheritance, gifts and savings

Inheritance is commonly evidenced with a will, a grant of probate, and a letter from the estate lawyer or executor. A gift is evidenced with a deed or letter of gift and, often, proof of the donor's own source of funds.

Accumulated savings are shown with bank statements over a meaningful period that demonstrate how the balance built up, rather than a single recent snapshot.

Presentation matters

Documents are usually expected as certified copies, with certified translations where they are not in the required language. Names, dates and amounts should be consistent across the file.

A bank reference letter and statements that show the money moving along the trail you describe help the reviewer follow the funds without gaps. Confirm the exact checklist with the licensed agent and the official programme authority, since requirements differ by country.

Common questions

What is the difference between source of funds and source of wealth?

Source of funds is where the specific investment money came from. Source of wealth is how you accumulated your assets overall. Programmes commonly ask for evidence of both.

Do documents need to be certified or translated?

Usually yes. Certified copies and certified translations are common requirements. Confirm the exact format with the licensed agent and the official authority for your chosen programme.

How far back should bank statements go?

Enough to show how the funds built up rather than a single snapshot. The exact period varies by programme, so confirm it with the official authority.
