How long does a second passport take

There is no single answer. A second passport can take a few months by direct citizenship by investment, or several years by naturalisation after residency. The route you choose sets the clock.

The two broad paths

Direct citizenship by investment gives a passport without first living in the country. A handful of Caribbean states run such programmes, with stated processing of roughly three to nine months once a complete file is filed and due diligence passes.

Citizenship by naturalisation comes after lawful residence. You hold a residence permit for a set number of years, meet presence and integration rules, then apply. This path usually runs to several years.

Typical ranges by route

Caribbean citizenship by investment programmes commonly state three to nine months. These figures assume clean due diligence and full documents, and they change, so confirm with the relevant citizenship authority.

European naturalisation timelines are far longer. Portugal, for example, counts years of legal residence before a citizenship application, and Malta now runs a merit based citizenship route after closing its investment route in 2025. Verify the current waiting period with the official authority.

What slows it down

Incomplete files, gaps in source of funds evidence, criminal record certificates that expire, and high application volumes all add time. Due diligence is the stage that most often extends a timeline.

Programme changes also matter. Rules, prices and even whole routes can close with little notice, so a timeline quoted today is not a guarantee.

Common questions

What is the fastest way to a second passport?

Direct citizenship by investment is usually fastest, with several Caribbean programmes stating three to nine months. Speed depends on a complete file and clean due diligence. Confirm current timelines with the relevant citizenship authority.

How long does naturalisation take?

It varies widely by country and is generally measured in years of lawful residence before you can apply, plus processing time. Check the exact period with the official migration or citizenship authority.

Do these timelines include my family?

Adding a spouse and children can add document gathering time but usually follows the same overall process. Each person is screened, so missing paperwork for any family member can delay the whole file.

Are quoted processing times guaranteed?

No. Stated times assume complete documents and no due diligence issues, and authorities can change them. Treat any figure as indicative and verify it before you act.
