Why it takes time

Banks must verify who you are and where your money comes from before they open an account. These know your customer and anti money laundering checks follow global standards set by bodies such as the FATF and enforced by each country's regulator. The checks are stricter for newcomers and for anyone moving funds across borders, which is why approval can take weeks.

Documents banks ask for

Expect to show a valid passport, your residence permit or visa, and proof of your local address. Banks also ask for evidence of the source of your funds, such as pay slips, sale documents or investment records. Having clean, translated and recent documents ready will move things along far faster than chasing them later.

Proof of residency and address

A local address is often the sticking point, because a utility bill or tenancy agreement may be requested before the account opens, yet you may need an account to rent. Ask the bank what it will accept in the gap, and confirm whether your residence permit alone is enough to start the process.

Tax reporting and the CRS

When you open an account, the bank will ask you to declare all of your tax residences. This is part of the Common Reporting Standard, under which account information is shared between participating countries. Answer accurately, because the data is exchanged with tax authorities, and a mismatch can cause problems later.

Common questions

Can I open an account before I arrive?

Sometimes, through a remote or non resident process, but many banks require you to be present and to show a local address. Ask the specific bank what it allows.

Why does the bank ask where my money came from?

Source of funds checks are required under anti money laundering rules. Clear documents proving the origin of your money speed the process up.

What is the CRS?

The Common Reporting Standard is a global system for sharing financial account information between tax authorities. Banks collect your tax residences to support it.
