The European Union removed Vanuatu from its visa free list in December 2024. Vanuatu citizens now need a Schengen visa or, once it applies, an ETIAS authorisation to travel to Europe. Older claims of visa free Schengen access are out of date.

Eligibility for Vietnamese nationals

Vanuatu citizenship by investment is open to applicants of many nationalities, including Vietnamese nationals, subject to due diligence checks on the applicant and the source of funds.

The route grants citizenship, so a Vietnamese national should consider that Vietnam generally restricts holding more than one nationality. Confirm how acquiring Vanuatu citizenship would affect your Vietnamese nationality before acting.

Routes

The main route is a contribution to the state under the official development support programme administered by the Citizenship Commission. Applicants are screened through due diligence before any grant.

Since July 2025 applicants have been required to provide biometrics in person, either in Vanuatu or at an overseas office. Confirm the current process with the official authority.

Timeline

Vanuatu has historically been one of the faster routes, but the biometric requirement added a step. Confirm the current expected timeline with the Citizenship Commission rather than relying on intermediary figures.

Costs

Widely cited contribution figures are shown below. Fees were added in 2025, so verify every number with the official authority before budgeting.

Are Vietnamese nationals eligible?

There is no published bar on Vietnamese applicants. Eligibility depends on passing due diligence checks.

Does Vanuatu allow dual citizenship?

Vanuatu permits dual citizenship, but Vietnam generally restricts it. Confirm your own position with the Vietnamese authority before acting.
