At a glance

One is a European residency route with a slow path to citizenship. The other is a direct citizenship route outside the European Union. The table sets out the headline differences.

Cost

Italy starts at 250,000 euros for an innovative startup, 500,000 euros for an established company, 1,000,000 euros for a philanthropic donation, or 2,000,000 euros in government bonds, with funds transferred in full. Turkey grants citizenship from a real estate purchase of at least 400,000 US dollars, or 500,000 US dollars through other approved assets such as a bank deposit or fixed capital, with the asset held for a set period. Government and professional fees sit on top in both cases. Confirm the current figures with each official authority.

Timeline

Turkey is the quicker of the two. Once a qualifying property is bought, research indicates citizenship is often decided within several months, with no residence or language test. Italy is slower by design. You gain residency first, renew it, and only become eligible for citizenship after a long period of legal residence. Confirm current processing times with each authority.

Passport reach

A Turkish passport is not a European Union document, though it offers its own travel network. Italian residency leads, in time, to European Union citizenship with free movement across the bloc. Which reach matters more depends on where you want to live and travel. Verify access lists with the official authority rather than marketing material.

Who each suits

Turkey suits someone who wants a second passport quickly, is comfortable holding property in Turkey, and does not need an EU passport. Italy suits someone who wants to live in Europe now and is patient about citizenship. Cost tolerance, speed and the value placed on an EU passport usually decide it.

Common questions

Which is faster, Italy or Turkey?

Turkey is generally the quicker route to a passport, often within months of a qualifying purchase. Italy gives residency first and citizenship only after a long period of legal residence. Confirm timelines with each authority.

Is the Turkish passport an EU passport?

No. Turkey is not a member of the European Union, so its passport does not grant European Union free movement. Italian citizenship, reached later, does. Verify current travel access with the official authority.

Can my family be included?

Both routes generally allow a spouse and dependent children to be included, subject to conditions. Confirm the current rules and any added cost with each official authority.
