What changed

The Active Investor Plus visa replaced the earlier investor categories and was reshaped to attract more active investment. It now runs as two streams. The Growth category asks for a minimum of 5 million New Zealand dollars held for at least three years in higher risk assets such as managed funds and direct investment. The Balanced category asks for a minimum of 10 million New Zealand dollars held for at least five years across a wider mix.

The English language requirement was removed, which widens the pool of eligible applicants.

From 1 June 2026, Growth applicants may direct up to 20 percent of their total investment to philanthropic giving, provided the New Zealand charity is registered, holds current donee status and meets reporting and track record conditions set by Immigration New Zealand.

Overseas based visa holders are now allowed to buy or build one residential property in New Zealand, an exception to the wider restriction on foreign residential buyers.

Current rules

Applicants must complete their investment within six months of approval in principle, with a possible six month extension. Funds must be transferred through traceable channels and invested in qualifying assets.

Time in country requirements are lighter than the old rules. Confirm the exact number of days and the current qualifying asset list with Immigration New Zealand.

What to watch

Demand has grown since the relaunch, so settings and qualifying asset lists may be tuned further. Check the official page before you plan.

Investment thresholds are set in New Zealand dollars, so the cost in your home currency moves with the exchange rate.
