Fast routes to a second citizenship when mobility is urgent

When travel freedom is needed quickly, the route you choose matters as much as the country. Some programmes grant citizenship in months, while residence routes take years before any passport is in reach.

What fast really means

Fast is about the route, not just the marketing. A genuine citizenship by investment programme can issue a passport within months, while a golden visa gives residence first and citizenship only after years of qualifying.

Even the quickest routes still run full due diligence. Speed comes from a streamlined process and no residence requirement, not from skipping background checks. Be cautious of any promise that sounds faster than the official authority allows.

The quickest category, citizenship by investment

Direct citizenship by investment programmes are the fastest path to a new passport. Vanuatu is frequently cited as the quickest, often around one to two months. The Caribbean programmes, namely Saint Kitts and Nevis, Dominica, Antigua and Barbuda, Grenada and Saint Lucia, commonly run in the region of three to six months.

These grant citizenship without a residence requirement, which is what allows the short timelines. Treat any specific turnaround as indicative and confirm it with the country's official unit, since processing varies with volume and policy.

Why golden visas are not the fast route

Residence by investment programmes, often called golden visas, can be quick to grant residence, but they do not give a passport. Citizenship through them follows ordinary naturalisation rules, usually over a number of years and often with stay and language conditions.

If a passport is the urgent need, a residence route will not meet a short deadline. If the urgent need is the right to live somewhere, a residence route can be the better fit.

What to check before you chase speed

Speed is one factor among several. The travel access of the passport, family inclusion, total cost, the country's reputation and the stability of the programme all shape whether a fast option is the right one.

A passport obtained from a poorly run or contested programme can carry future risk, including reviews of its travel access. Weigh durability alongside speed, and use the Get Matched route below to reach a vetted, independent advisor who can map options to your deadline.

Common questions

What is the fastest way to a second passport?

A direct citizenship by investment programme. Vanuatu is often cited as quickest at around one to two months, with Caribbean programmes commonly in the three to six month range. Confirm current timelines with each official unit.

Can a golden visa give me a passport quickly?

No. Golden visas grant residence, not citizenship. A passport would follow ordinary naturalisation over years. If a passport is the urgent need, a residence route will not meet a short deadline.

Is the fastest option always the best?

Not necessarily. Travel access, family inclusion, cost, reputation and programme stability all matter. A passport from a contested programme can carry future risk. Weigh durability alongside speed.
