Schengen access through European residency

A European residence permit lets you live in the country that issued it, but it does not turn you into a citizen of the whole Schengen area. This guide explains what such a permit gives you, and the travel limits that still apply elsewhere.

What Schengen access actually means

The Schengen area is a group of European states that have removed routine border checks between them. As of 2026 it covers 29 countries. Access through residency means your permit lets you live in the issuing state and cross internal borders without a fresh visa, but it does not give you the right to live indefinitely in any other member state.

What a national residence permit gives you

A national residence permit, such as a passive income or self employment route, lets you stay in the issuing country beyond the usual short stay limit. It is your legal basis to live, and often to work, in that one country. It also lets you travel within the wider area for short trips without applying for a separate visa each time.

The 90 in 180 limit in other states

Here is the part people miss. When you travel to other Schengen states on your residence permit, you are generally treated like a visitor, limited to 90 days in any rolling 180 day window across those other states. To live longer in a different country, you would need that country's own permit. Your permit gives you a home base, not free settlement everywhere.

How the Entry and Exit System changes things

The Entry and Exit System now records entries and exits digitally at external borders. That makes the day count easier for authorities to enforce, so casual overstaying is riskier than it once was. Keep your own record of days spent in other member states and do not rely on a relaxed check at the border.

How to confirm your position

Rules differ by permit type and can change, so confirm two things with the official sources, what your specific permit allows in the issuing country, and how your days are counted when you travel elsewhere. We do not name or recommend firms. Use Get Matched to compare vetted advisors if you want help mapping a route.

Common questions

Does a residence permit let me live anywhere in Schengen

No. It lets you live in the country that issued it. In other member states you are generally limited to 90 days in any 180 day period, like a visitor. Confirm the rule for your permit type with the official sources.

How many countries are in the Schengen area

As of 2026 the area covers 29 countries. The list can change, so verify the current membership with the European Commission before you plan travel.

Can a residence permit lead to permanent status

Many national permits can build toward long term residence and, in time, naturalisation in that country, but the conditions vary widely. Confirm the path with the relevant national authority.
