What a plan B residency is

A plan B residency is a lawful base in another country that you can activate when you choose. It can be a place to relocate, a way to diversify where your family can live and bank, or simply peace of mind. It is an option you hold, not a promise that you must use.

Residency is not citizenship

Residency lets you live in a country under conditions, and it can lapse if you do not meet them. Citizenship is usually permanent and brings a passport. Many residency routes can lead to citizenship over years of lawful residence, but the step is rarely automatic. Be clear which outcome you actually want before you spend.

How to choose a jurisdiction

Match the country to your real reasons. Weigh how stable its rules are, how much physical presence it demands, its cost of living, its tax treatment of newcomers, its language and its distance from family. A cheaper programme that you can never realistically use is not a bargain.

Keeping it valid

A plan B only works if it stays alive. Track renewal dates, minimum stay rules and any reporting duties. Rules change, so review your status periodically and confirm current requirements with the official authority rather than assuming last year's terms still hold.

Common questions

Do I have to move to keep a plan B residency?

It depends on the country. Some require real physical presence each year, others very little. Check the minimum stay rule for the specific programme.

Will a plan B residency give me a passport?

Not directly. Some residency routes lead to citizenship after years of lawful residence, but the step is separate and not guaranteed.
