British nationals can settle in Thailand for the long term through two separate routes, the Long Term Resident visa run by the Thailand Board of Investment and the Thailand Privilege Card membership.

British passport holders face no nationality bar on either route. The Long Term Resident visa is open to four groups, namely Wealthy Global Citizens, Wealthy Pensioners, Work from Thailand Professionals and Highly Skilled Professionals. You qualify on financial and professional criteria rather than on nationality.
In January 2025 the Thai Cabinet approved updates to the Long Term Resident scheme. The minimum annual income condition was removed for the Wealthy Global Citizens group, and the rules on dependants were widened so that a holder can include a spouse, children, parents and other legal dependants. Confirm the criteria that apply to you before you commit.
The Long Term Resident visa is the route that carries work rights and tax and immigration benefits, and it is issued by the Thailand Board of Investment. The Thailand Privilege Card, formerly the Thailand Elite, is a paid membership administered by Thailand Privilege Card Co Ltd, a state enterprise linked to the Tourism Authority of Thailand. The Privilege Card grants long stay rights but does not allow you to work or hold a work permit.
Choose the route by what you need. If you intend to work or run a business in Thailand the Long Term Resident visa is the relevant path. If you are retired or living on income from outside Thailand and do not need to work, the Privilege Card can be simpler to obtain.
For the Long Term Resident visa the Board of Investment reports that applicants are told the outcome of the qualification review within about 20 working days of submitting complete and valid documents. The visa is granted for ten years, issued as an initial five years that can be renewed for a further five. Confirm current processing times with the authority.
The Board of Investment lists a Long Term Resident visa issuance fee. Thailand Privilege Card membership is priced by tier and the published fees change, so treat any figure you see elsewhere as indicative only. The table below shows what is confirmed and what you should verify directly.
